THIS JUST IN - in 2007 at one local shelter, 8,075 cats were euthanized - that is up from 6,180 in 2004. Folks, we can't do it alone, we need your help. A "quick check" with the other rescue groups who responded to my question of how many adoptions for 2007 elicited this response:
CCI - 645
X - 147
X - 516
X - 400-450
That is 1,733 adoptions from just four of the numerous groups in town, or a little more than 1/8 of the cats that were euthanized. The other groups have not responded, but it looks like rescue does work and it will continue to be effective if each of you would help. How can you help?
Get your cats/dogs spayed and neutered at a young age. Keep unaltered ones inside.
Encourage your neighbors to get their cats/dogs altered. Encourage them to keep them indoors.
Donate to local rescue groups who pay out of their own pockets to spay/neuter stray animals.
Support legislation that enables those without resources to obtain free spay/neuter services.
Thank you. I'm leaving the previous stats so you can see how they are calculated for one county.

The following information concerning the Animal Services Division applies to Fiscal Year 2003/2004 (October 2003 Ӣ September 2004) and includes cats and kittens:
- Total Kittens and Cats Impounded - 8,599
- Shelter Adoptions - 878
- Satellite Adoptions - 336
- Rescues - 99
- Reclaimed by Owners - 143 (less than 2%)
- Euthanasias - 6,180
Out of 8,599 cats and kittens that were impounded at this one facility, 6,180 were killed. For some it was a matter of being too young, too old, sick with a treatable ailment. Some were feral, abandoned or just too many for the facility. While this is the entire list of cats and kittens, of the 1,169 animals reclaimed last year only 147 were cats that the owners reclaimed or less than 2%.
